Product review..The breastfeeding sleepshirt..

Any breastfeeding mum will have come across this struggle at some point in their nursing life. You wake up to do the night feed and your pjs annoy your baba by flapping in their face and they get further annoyed by you taking so long fumbling around in the dark to lift your pjs up. You are then sat up half naked for the good part of an hour, or you fall asleep nursing and spend the rest of the night freezing with half your top up and half down.
Well ladies, I have discovered something which will revolutionise nighttime nursing for you.. the breastfeeding sleepshirt by Daisypops.
The sleepshirt has sleeves to keep your shoulders warm (one of the reasons I hate wearing vests to bed is I spend most of the night with my shoulders out of the duvet..), and a simple split across the front of the top so you can pop your baby on your chest and feed away without having to fumble around in the dark and without freezing to death.
It’s also great for loungewear when your in the house (especially in the postpartum early days)  but want to be in something comfy that is still practical to feed in. In fact I love mine so much I have been using it out of the house as it’s just so easy to feed in! It has been a godsend when leaving the house in this mini heatwave! 

The material is lovely and soft and it comes in 7 lovely colours and the lovely people at daisypops now ship to the UK! I was super impressed that my top arrived in less than a week. The shirt costs approx Β£27 and is worth every penny as even though it’s summer here in the U.K. the weather cannot make its mind up so some nights are freezing and some nights boiling hot and I hate being cold at night.

The pro’s for me are fuss free feeding, no more cold shoulders at night, and super discrete feeding if you wear it out the house. I’m not usually a fan of nursing clothes as they don’t usually look good, but this sleepshirt has been really well made with lovely quality cotton and I felt great wearing it and it’s going to come in handy so much during winter night feeds.

Outfit of the week

So this weekend we have faced a new dilemma.. what to wear during a heatwave that is breastfeeding friendly and minimises two sweaty bodies making each other even more sweaty πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

 I will save you all from witnessing what I’ve been wearing this past weekend, so here is an outfit from earlier on in the week, before the heatwave kicked in. 

A light cotton t-shirt from Zara, with some New look jeggings, with some comfy sandals from Asos πŸ˜. 


All of the summer clothes sales have started but I am trying my very best to avoid looking online as it really is time I did something about my baby weight! From tomorrow I am actually starting a healthy eating plan! Wish me luck..

So this week we had yet another wedding meaning another ‘formal’ feeding friendly outfit to find. As I didn’t have time to get to the shops, I had massss of online deliveries arrive all week, and finally caught a moment when both babies were napping to try it ALL on and settled for this lovely outfit..

I felt great and the outfit was perfect for feeding in which was ideal as my little monkey wouldn’t drink the expressed milk I had taken for him!

In the search for some new breastfeeding friendly clothes, I stumbled upon the website Shein. Stylish, on trend clothes and very reasonably priced. 

I’m still waiting for the haul of things to arrive (the two downsides I’ve found so far is, your items come sporadically and take a very long time to arrive). But so far I am loving this T shirt. 

I wore it with high waisted jeans and a vest underneath so I could feed by pulling the tshirt over and the vest down. Oh and my Adidas sandals. And I felt great wearing it πŸ™‚

So this week we attended a wedding and I had the dilemma of what to wear that I could also easily breastfeed in (and hide my mum tum in πŸ˜‚). 

I found this lovely wrap dress from River Island.. as it was wrapped at the front it was easy to feed in without having to take the dres off! Perfect!

I’m loving Zara at the minute, resulting in lots of late night online shopping binges during night feeds but not knowing what will or won’t suite my new postpartum shape means I’ve made multiple trips into town already to return most of it πŸ˜‚. 

One item I did keep was this colourful shirt blouse, which was so easy to feed in. I wore a vest underneath for OUOD and fed discreetly. You could also just undo the buttons. It’s loose so perfect to hide my new mum tum! Also wearing some ‘mum fit’ trousers from zara. So I didn’t look like I was on my way to the office with two babies in tow, I opted for some causal pastel with rose gold detailed leather Converse shoes 😍.

Are any other new mums struggling with their new post pregnancy shape?? I certainly am! Also uber bored of all my old clothes and my old ‘breastfeeding friendly’ pieces. This, coupled with the fact I barely have time to shower and get dressed and look sooo drained from the lack of sleep, is making me feel very ‘Mumsy’ on a day to day basis. 

As I’m more experienced with breastfeeding this time (less fumbling involved) I’m more comfortable with OUOD (one up one down) so I’ll be on the hunt for more clothes suitable for this, whilst also sticking to buttoned clothes (but trying to find some more exciting ones πŸ˜‚). To motivate me to actually make an effort to like half decent every once in a while, I’m going to attempt to upload a breastfeeding friendly outfit of the week.. so here is my first one..

My postpartum survival must haves.Β 

So you have your hospital bag all packed and ready, the baby bag is ready, and your nursery all set up. But as a first time mum you can easily overlook preparing what you will need post baby, I know I did first time round resulting in my sister making daily trips to the supermarket.. bless her. 

Second time round I was more prepared and it’s made a massive difference so I thought I’d share my postpartum survival must haves with you all.. 

  1. Nipple cream.. I used Lanisoh. It’s pricey at around Β£10 a tube but so worth it. The early days of breastfeeding are extremely hard, and I don’t think anyone prepares a first time mum for how painful it really will be. This little purple tube, takes some of that pain away.
  2. Maternity Pads.. first time round I certainly wasn’t prepared for the amount of bleeding and length of time this would continue. I think I only brought a couple of packets of pads. You will need more, a whole lot more, so stock up! Boots usually have a 3 for 2 on maternity products, and I found these ultra slim ones to be the best. While your doing an online shop, you might as well pick up number 3 & 4 too..
  3. Disposable bed mats.. great for when your waters break (not saying your psychic and will know when this will happen but if your in early labour you could prepare), and for using for the first few weeks post baby,  these are great for savouring your bedsheets. 
  4. Disposable briefs..you may think why?! But, you won’t have time for loads of laundry and you can keep spares on hand in the bathroom as you may get through a few a day and I just found using these easier and less faff in the first week or two while the bleeding was very heavy (nobody told me about how much I would bleed?!). Again, I got these from the boots maternity section. You can find them here
  5. Nursing tanks.. or nursing friendly pjs.. this will make nursing throughout the night so much easier. With my first I wore baggy shirts which was a faff and you end up annoying your newborn as your top waves around their face. A nursing tank or buttoned pjs make such a difference. 
  6. Spare pjs to hand! The amount of times I’ve been puked on, my milk has leaked and even poo’d on during the night is unreal. Keep some spare pjs out, especially if like me, your clothes are all kept in your spare room where your visitors are sleeping πŸ˜‚. 
  7. Water! It’s crazy how thirsty you get when your up at night, especially if you are a nursing mum. I keep a big bottle of water and a glass on my bedside table so I don’t have to get up during the night. 
  8. A breast pump! This was particularly useful as a first time mum as I leaked and felt ‘full’ a lot in the early days. It hasn’t been as bad second time around, but I found a pump really helped to relieve the pain and fullness. I really do want to start pumping more his time and trying my little munchkin on a bottle so I can catch a break every so often.. it’s just finding the time to pump for this seems impossible.. sighs. 
  9. Nappy stations.. This has been vital with a toddler and a baby about. I used to do all nappy changes in the nursery with my older monkey but it’s not simply possible to leave what you are doing and head upstairs as I can’t leave my oldest downstairs alone for a second. So I’ve set up a ‘nappy station’ downstairs with both boys nappy essentials and lots of spare clothes, and two more upstairs in different rooms. This has helped a great deal when my newborn has needed a whole outfit change and I have two screaming babies to deal with. Everything is right there on hand! 
  10. Sleepyhead. When your a first time mum you can easily get carried away with paraphernalia aimed to give you the ‘perfect baby experience’. I’m not one to get carried away with this and we have barely brought anything new for baby number 2.. BUT I can’t recommend the Sleepyhead enough. It’s worked a treat with both my boys, and allowed me to put them down as soon as they are asleep. My newest monkey did still resist being put in it for the first four or five days but soon got used to it with some persistence. This would be my number one baby item if I could have only one thing in the world.. 

So that’s my top ten things for making the early weeks just a little bit easier.. what are your just have things/ hacks for the first few weeks? Would love to know..

    Our breastfeeding journey..Β 

    Breastfeeding was something I felt really strongly about. I was adamant it was what I was going to do and if you asked me a year ago I had strong views on why anyone would do anything differently. It’s so easy to have views on parenting choices when your not a parent!  Anyway, back to my reasons for breastfeeding, the facts speak for themselves..( read up on the benefits here).. plus it felt like the most natural thing to do. But, I now know, I was lucky with my breastfeeding journey, very lucky..

    My baby latched on straight away after birth (skin to skin deffo helped). Yes the first 4-6 weeks were HARD. It was painful, I had sore, cracked and bleeding nipples. Me and my baby struggled to find the right latch, and I felt uncomfortable even feeding at home with so many people around. We had just moved house and only had one living room set up, if I wanted privacy (which I did), I had to leave the room. Which wasn’t easy initially with my stitches. In the end I gave in and fed in front of everyone, making me more anxious and uncomfortable in the early days. 

    But, we had no real issues. Cracked nipples and soreness is completely normal, and because I was adamant I didn’t let this stop me. But I can easily see how this would be hard for some people to deal with. Especially with lack of knowledge and the wrong advice. And as a new mum, the advice keeps flowing, and you start to question whether the baby is getting enough milk, are they hungry, are they jaundice, is your milk sufficient? Like I said I was lucky, we had no major feeding issues so my only challenge was dealing with the pain and getting the hang of it which took around 6 weeks. Had I not been so determined and desperate to make it work, and had not done my research, I could have easily given up. And if I had given up, there would have been nothing wrong with that, a happy baby and mum is more important than anything. 

    And this is where my views have changed. Prior to being a mother, and even as a new mum, I couldn’t understand why a women wouldn’t breastfeed or atleast attempt to. I was so naΓ―ve. I’ve since witnessed my cousin and best friend become mums and have totally different experiences to me. Both wanting to breastfeed, but both being separated from their babies after birth, and consequently having to face even more difficulties in their breastfeeding journeys than normal. I’ve also witnessed lack of support from health professionals in the first few days, at the detriment of establishing breastfeeding altogether. I now know, that for some people, no matter how adamant they are, the circumstances take the choice away from them. Again, I was lucky, and am thankful for how things turned out for me. 

    As I said before, breastfeeding is hard. It’s the hardest thing I have ever done..I can easily see why so many people do not stick it out. Your baby relies on you 100%, which means everything you do, everything you wear, down to everywhere you go, is centred around feeding your baby. And, if like me, you have a bottle refuser (my monkey had no interest in expressed milk), you literally feel like you never get a break from being ‘mummy’. And the night wake ups and lack of sleep can really catch up on you. When your a breastfeeding mummy, you can’t just have a night off, or even a few hours off. Your always there, on call incase your baby needs you, 24 hours a day. 

    As well as being a bottle refuser, what made breastfeeding harder for me, was the fact that he was not interested in food until he was 13 months old. Which meant he was exclusively fed by me until then. Finally at 13 months he started to eat a meal a day, then within days this turned into three meals! I nearly cried the first time he ate a meal as I literally thought the day would never come and it meant so much to me. 

    And it couldn’t have come at a better time as I was 4 months pregnant, and was getting kicked in the tummy and breastfeeding was becoming uncomfortable. Being pregnant, my milk supply had dwindled drastically and the soreness and pain from breastfeeding in the early days came flooding back. But I persevered for two more months. I had always hoped to feed until a minimum of 2 years, as recommended by the World Health Organisation, but the realities of feeding when pregnant, the pain, the tiredness, and my monkeys frustration from getting very little milk from me, which in turn added to the soreness, had become too much. 

    So at 15 months we called it a day, it took three days for my monkey to stop asking and I offered lots of snacks and lots of cuddles. I felt so sad and so bad for my monkey for refusing him of the one thing he wanted. But if he hadn’t have taken to it so well, I probably would have continued. I really think the fact I was pregnant and my supply had reduced so much, made the whole thing so much easier, for us both. He’s never asked again and the last two months have resulted in a toddler who eats so much, is less clingy and sleeps all night (an added bonus). 

    I am so proud of our breastfeeding journey, and proud of us both for making it to 15 months, especially since recent research suggests that only 0.5% of people are still breastfeeding at 12 months in the U.K. (BBC article, 2016). A statistic that shocks me, but also fills me with pride. I’m proud that I could feed my baby, and give him the best start I could, and I’m also grateful as I know, it’s not so simple for everyone, and mothers do the best they can in the choices they make. I’m not going to lie, it’s been nice to have a break from feeding this last two months, but I am looking forward to hopefully doing it again..only 9 weeks to go 😍

    We’re going to the zoo..

    Or rather, we’re going to the zoo so my monkey can ignore all the pretty and cool animals to simply look up at the birds in the sky.. The same birds we watch daily in our back garden πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. The same thing happened when we went to our local sea life centre.. (The best part about that day was lunch by the canals after, we were in and out of the sea life centre within 30 minutes).

    So, I’ll be saving some pennies and waiting until my little monkeys is a little older until we return to either again. The farm on the other hand, is a whole different story. He loved it. We picked a local children’s farm called Ash End House. It took us just under 30 minutes to drive there from birmingham, and it was a little gem. The enclosures are the right heights for small children and babies in pushchairs to get a good glimpse of the animals. 

    Sami was so excited by the animals until they came close and then he did get a little fright. He’s a little young just yet but other toddlers were having a great time feeding the animals. We loved the little lamb the most, and also all the baby animals being fed by their mothers, just how nature intended. As a breastfeeding mum, it made me feel like I was part of the mummy animal club, as strange as that sounds.. 

    All in all, we found a children’s farm is a great way to spend an afternoon with a baby, it’s the best day trip we’ve found so far that’s suitable for his age. I can’t wait until he’s a little older and can interact a little more. I’ll leave you with a few snaps of our trip..
